I got up early, took my morning meds and went back to bed. I didn’t have to wait for the house to warm up. It’s been so warm outside that the heaters haven’t come on for a long time. It was 74 degrees at 2 p.m. That’s just a bit much for December 27.

Speaking of December 27, this is the 51st anniversary of my mother marrying my stepfather. That was the only wedding I ever played for. She didn’t choose traditional wedding music which was fine with me. I never learned it and I don’t anticipate ever trying.

The other anniversary is her death. Eleven years ago this morning, my BIL woke me and said there’d been a call from the nursing home. I pulled on my clothes and dashed out. When I got there, she was already gone but her body was still warm. I put my hand on her chest and there was no heartbeat. She was so miserable, I’d prayed that the Lord would go ahead and let her go. He had granted my prayer. She was 100 years, four months and 10 days old. Up until she’d had to go to the hospital in October, she had lived in her own home with lots of help from my sisters. Always one to “keep house”, she would hold to her walker with one hand and vacuum with the other.

I was getting ready to do my body test with the Wii when the doorbell rang. It was Cuz. She had her Christmas present with her — a Kindle Fire. She thought I could help her with it but I have next to zero experience with a Kindle. I wasn’t much help at all. We talked about the House Sitter’s computer and I said that the best thing would be to clean it off and start over.

She left and came back over. I asked her if she’d talked to the HS and she had failed to say anything to her. When she left again, the HS came with her notebook. To say it was a mess is an understatement. I made it clear what I planned to do and she agreed to my wiping it clean. The last time I looked at it, it was trying to go from Windows 8 to 8.1 but was unable to.

When she left me with it, I started it up. It was updating. I don’t know if it was already up to 8.1 or if it just got around to it today. Anyway, it had 8.1 on it.

Let me tell you, when a computer has 8.1, there’s no easy way to reinstall Windows. I tried and tried and when I Googled it, there were instructions I wasn’t comfortable following. It was over my head. I decided to upgrade to Windows 10 (which the HS had agreed to) and see if I could reinstall it.

The Windows 10 upgrade was as painless as mine had been but it did away with the touchpad software with the ability to disable it when a mouse was attached. I did everything I knew to do and nothing worked.

Putting that aside, I went to Reset and started the process to reinstall Windows 10. It warned me that it couldn’t be rolled back to 8.1 and that’s fine because HS hated it. As did millions of other people. At the moment, it’s 50% complete so I’ll probably go to bed with it still working.

It’s 71 degrees in here and 71% humidity. It doesn’t make it any easier to breathe. I may have to turn on the a/c just to pull some of the moisture out of the air.

I may sleep in Mother’s chair tonight. The air is so sticky, I don’t feel like trying to go to bed. We’ll see, though. I might change my mind. I am a woman, you know.

Never mind the unseasonable temperatures – more typical weather is on the way.

I know. For now, it’s still warmer than normal and raining — again.
