The House Guest

When I wrote last night’s post, I forgot to include the excitement from the night before.

GuestI’d gone to start the water running for my bath, and what should greet me but a giant house spider. The one pictured here isn’t it. I didn’t EVEN think about my camera. I went to the kitchen, got a large plastic container and paper big enough to cover the opening. Easing the container over the spider, I slid the paper underneath, balanced it on my hand and held it in place with my chin while I opened the front door with my other hand. I took it to the edge of the deck and set it free. A smaller spider would have just been chased out of the tub and allowed to stay inside but when one’s big enough to answer the phone…It was at least 2.5″ from leg tip to leg tip and that’s with them flexed. If they were laid out flat, it would have been much larger than that. The rest of my bath time passed uneventfully.

I did a bit better with the lower wedge last night. It was only TO the foot of the bed and not hanging off. Maybe I need to get Cuz to cut a piece of plywood to go at the foot to hold it in place.

Since the bottom is supposed to drop out of the thermometer starting tomorrow, I figured I’d better get done what I had to do today. It was a nice, sunny day but cool. I still had a quarter of a tank of gas but I don’t like for it to get much lower than that. I’m still getting 37 mpg.

The Walmart Pharmacy had a line clear back and around one end cap. I figured I’d get the rest of my stuff and come back later for my prescription.

I only had one item to price match—grapefruit for 33¢. I was hoping for almond milk but I’ve discovered the price for Almond Breeze has gone up and Silk has gone down. That’s a switch. I looked for some Holiday Nog. It makes excellent creamer for my Dandy Blendbut I’m sure I don’t need to be using it on a regular basis since it’s soy. I asked the dairy guy but he said he hadn’t had any in for a long time. I could believe that. The last time I was there they were out.

My produce girl was on the job so I got my hug. I still have some persimmons and avocadoes—I didn’t need her to rustle anything up for me.

On my second trip to the pharmacy, the line had gone down considerably. I got my prescription and started down the aisle on my way to check out. That’s when I saw an old friend. He and I went to school together when I was a sophomore in academy and his wife and I were in Cradle Roll as toddlers. We got into a conversation for how long, I don’t know. We probably talked for half an hour.

I hardly ever stop at Bi-Lo but I did today on the off-chance that they might have some Holiday Nog. They didn’t but I noticed So Delicious was back in the dairy case. I went to frozen food and found So Delicious Coconut Ice Cream! I got a carton of chocolate and one of mint chip. I’m not saying how much I paid. This will do me for a LONG time.

The Catz met me when I got home. After I finished unloading and putting away, I checked my email. There was a text from Cuz asking me to do the feeding today. I remembered to take the mask with me this time and it did help. The male baby was so hungry, I thought he was going to jump out of the cage to get to the food. I left the door closed and distracted him by throwing some of the dry treats in. I only saw one female but left enough for two, anyway.

After I got the Catz fed and came home, I texted Cuz and asked about the female babies. Sure enough, one died a week or so ago. Well, the remaining one has plenty to eat.

I had chili for supper and I”m not sure that was a good idea. I can’t tolerate spicy like I used to before my Adventure with Reflux started. I ate crackers both before and after but I’m still a bit uncomfortable.

Tonight’s low is supposed to be in the 20s. Tomorrow night’s is predicted at 8°. Thursday night is back in the teens and the rain moves in on Sunday—IF you can believe the Weather Guessers.

You could have kept the spider to answer the phone for you! My stink bug catcher is a 1/2 pint jar and a piece of cardboard, but you’d have to use a wide mouth jar for a spider that big. I am not as kind to the stink bugs as you were to the spider. Let’s just say that they sail away to other realms.

If I were still working, I might do that. The phone rang ‘way too often in the office. Here at home, not so much. I’ve let people know I prefer email. Our mother would have said you make sailors of the stink bugs.

No matter the size of the spider, they don’t survive in my house. Time was I would remove them, but no more. Just say I’m croo-hearted (quoting here).

I like for them to do away with less desirable critters. I used to not appreciate them but then I read Be Nice to Spidersand it changed my mind.

Ted used to put the spiders out until he picked up a tiny speck of one and it bit him! Needless to say, no more mercy.

THERE’S the difference. I don’t pick any of them up. I ride them out of the bathtub on the scrubby thing.
