My Square Foot Garden: It’s Growing!

I’m beginning to see some real growth in the garden. Isn’t spring exciting? Now that we’re moving to the end of the month of May and are close to June, it’s not long until the first day of summer. Just a little over three weeks and it will be here! I’ve already been having cilantro, arugula and basil in my salads in the evening. Those three give romaine just the right punch. DEEEEE-licious!

It won’t be long until the first cherry tomatoes will be ready to pick from my Topsy Turvy plant.

Everything is really taking off. It’s that mushroom dirt all over again. I sampled the romaine and it was bitter so I pulled it up and planted arugula where it had been.

When I spied some shiny green leaves among the onions, I thought my neighbor might have planted a sweet potato there but then I remembered! I had a jicama that had almost dried up so I took it and buried it right down to the bottom of the box. It has come up! I wonder if I will have jicamas to harvest…I’d looked online about growing them but all I found was jicama seed and nothing about growing them from the tuber itself. This says it’s actually a legume. Guess that’s so much for not planting sprawling vines this year.

Jicama!

My neighbor got the original boxes filled so I had a burst of energy Monday evening and planted them. It’s cilantro and dill. I know that’s more cilantro than I’ll need—probably. The way I’ve been eating it, maybe not.

So, how does your garden grow?

Your garden looks great! We are overrun with green beans at the moment, but we’ve been able to harvest some lettuce. Your herbs look great!

I don’t know about anyone else, but I can never have too much cilantro! My favorite is to make a green smoothie with lots of cilantro and mango. You wouldn’t think it, but the flavors go together magnificently!

Sparrow, I never tried that! I’ve had mango and cilantro in Fred’s Mom’s Salad but not a smoothie. Are there just the two ingredients?

I throw in a banana or two to make it thicker and creamier and usually some filtered water so it will blend well (since I don’t have a high-speed blender) and that’s it. It’s my all-time favorite smoothie!

Since I’m allergic to spinach, I’m glad to know about this. I’ll have to try it tomorrow! My 4th of July smoothie…
