Organization and Fleas
October 30, 2008
Encouraged by merm to get my flea posts better organized, I’ve crafted a page with his help that, hopefully, manages to bring the links all together in one spot. It puts them in chronological order. Besides maybe helping some poor unfortunate soul who is trying to get rid of fleas, it serves to amaze me how much I put up with before I got down and dirty with the critters.
While I was bent on getting rid of them by natural means, they were intent on taking over my house. It was something they accomplished quite handily. They went from a few on my ankles to thousands and maybe millions (my mother always told me not to exaggerate) in a few days’ time.
I wish success for anyone waging the same war. May all the fleas in your house and yard rest in peace.

Get rid of fleas naturally – equal parts borax and salt in a BIG bowl.
Easy to get rid of fleas naturally. First clean your house. Especially the carpets… vacuum well and throw all the vacuum stuff into a plastic bag, tie, and in the dump.
Next get a big bowl, equal parts borax (laundry borax from target) and salt. Blend it well. Sprinkle every inch of your home, like it was carpet powder and put some into the vacuum canister that you just emptied in case there are fleas and eggs in there. The borax/salt mixture dehydrates the fleas and eggs breaking the cycle of flea/egg. Vacuum carpet after seven days.
Repeat the process, until you are sure all the buggers are gone. Usually they are gone in seven days, but depending on the infestation…do it again. Mine was so bad one year. This is the only thing that worked. Then I was so scared of the fleas I kept the mixture on hand all the time.

Thanks! I found the salt attracts moisture from EVERYWHERE and ANYTHING so if you mix the borax with salt and use it on your carpets (and upholstery, BTW) do it when the weather is dry and the humidity is down. Borax alone works, too, in my experience. It’s a sad fact that I’ve had lots of experience!
Also, if there are any cocoons at all left in your carpet/upholstery, they can be viable for years according to this site.

I send Orange Guard to Iraq for my daughter. Fleas are rampant there. Orange peel extract via Orange Guard is the only thing that she says keeps them away. I use it in my house around my cats and dog. I’ve even dipped them in it. Diluted of course. I spray about every other week, perimeter of the house, sheets, etc. Never had a problem since with 12 cats and a dog.

Wow! Good to know! It’s available reasonably close to me, too. I’ll remember that. There aren’t any flea invasions but it’s good for ants, too, and they’re beginning to show themselves. Any suggestions about fruit flies? No problem yet but I’d like to nip it in the bud.
